To the right is a picture of Greg Rathe, someone else who benefited from the total artificial heart, and the surgeons that performed the operation on him. Greg Rathe ( seated at the far right) was rejecting his donor heart and when he went to the hospital he learned that he needed a new heart immediately. The problem was his heart was so far deteriorated that the only option for him was the Total Artificial Heart. Thankfully the implant was successful and Greg survived the operation. This operation happened to be the first of its kind in the state of Nebraska, and it made the Nebraska Medical Center better known for their cardiovascular care.
Many people have benefited from the artificial heart. One example is a mother and son dying from heart failure in Virginia. They both needed donor heart transplants in order to live, but none were available. In order to survive, they both received the SynCardia temporary total artificial heart transplants. The temporary artificial heart saved both the mother and son from the source and symptoms of end-stage heart failure. This technological advancement made it possible for them to get stronger and live a healthier life until a heart donor was available.
